Rice was originally brought to Charleston in 1686. Cultivated extensively throughout the Lowcountry and areas surrounding Charleston, rice production created played a significant role in the local economy, culture and history prior to the Civil War. The heirloom Carolina Gold Rice was nearly lost in the twentieth century in favor of crops with higher yields, a small quantity of seed was found in the 1990's and resurrected. Our silver plated, heirloom quality rice spoon is patterned after the historic rice spoons used throughout Charleston and the Lowcountry. Traditionally rice was served at the daily mid-day dinner in the area.
